Bucharest Fringe – Independent Theatre Marathon returns September 4-13, 2026, bringing ten days of independent theatre, dance, physical theatre, and performative installations to venues across the Romanian capital.
Now in its 16th edition, the festival presents 25 productions created by independent companies, established artists and theatre students. Performances take place at Teatrul Apropo and several partner venues around Bucharest.
Bucharest Fringe 2026 Programme
The festival opens on Friday, September 4, with Piatră-Hârtie-Foarfecă at Teatrul Apropo and Nașterea unui Dictator at Teatrul În Culise.
The first weekend includes Blind Date Cultural at POINT Art Hub, Raskolnikov, După Crimă și Pedeapsă at Teatrul În Culise, Antigona at unteatru, American Dream, Rostopasca at Palatul Lahovary and Timon din Atena at the State Jewish Theatre.
The programme continues throughout the week with productions including Broscoiul, Lalele, Păsări și Beton, Doru în Lumea Emoțiilor, Dealul Florilor, Pe Limba Ta, Mantas, Așa Grăit-a, Dreamin’, H de la A la Z, Peștii Dorm? and Tavanul de Sticlă.
The final weekend brings Closer, SAMSARA – Surrender to Change or Suffer in a Loop, Omul cu Ciocanul, Tea and Milk, SWEET SPOT and Procesul A.I.. The awards ceremony and official closing take place at Teatrul Apropo on Sunday, September 13.
Independent Theatre, Dance and New Productions
Bucharest Fringe includes several festival sections dedicated to different areas of independent performance.
The Competition section presents selected independent productions, while the Student Theatre Evenings introduce emerging actors, directors and creators. The programme also includes performances hosted by partner independent theatres, new productions premiering during the festival and several events with free admission.
The 2026 selection brings together productions from Bucharest and other Romanian theatre centres, offering visitors an overview of the subjects, formats and artistic approaches currently explored by the country’s independent theatre scene.
Performances Accessible to International Visitors
Most Bucharest Fringe productions are performed primarily in Romanian.
Dreamin’, presented on Thursday, September 10, at 20:30 at unteatru, is performed in Romanian, English and French, with French surtitles.
SAMSARA – Surrender to Change or Suffer in a Loop, scheduled for Saturday, September 12, at 19:30 at Linotip – Independent Choreographic Centre, is a physical-theatre production that relies strongly on movement and visual expression.
Despite its English title, Tea and Milk, performed on Sunday, September 13, at Teatrul Coquette, is presented in Romanian and includes some English words and expressions.

Tickets are sold separately for each performance, and prices vary by production. Several outdoor performances and festival events have free admission.
Pupils and students receive free admission to the festival performances, subject to availability and prior registration through the form provided by the organisers.
