Travel tips for Bucharest: a few things that will save you time (and stress)

Bucharest is a very easy city to explore once you understand a few local “rules of the game”. First, plan your sightseeing by neighbourhood, not by attractions. The city is larger than it looks on the map, and crossing it back and forth can waste half your day. Group your visits around areas like Old Town and Unirii, Calea Victoriei, the Parliament zone, or Herăstrău and the northern parks.

Always keep some cash with you, even if you mainly pay by card. Most places accept card payments, but small kiosks, older cafés, or quick street stops may still prefer cash. For taxis and rides, skip random street pickups and use rideshare apps instead — it’s faster, more predictable, and you avoid pricing discussions.

Public transport is surprisingly useful, especially the metro. It’s clean, simple to navigate, and often the quickest way to move between major points of interest. If you plan to walk a lot, wear comfortable shoes — the city is walkable, but you’ll often deal with long distances, uneven pavements, and large intersections.

Finally, don’t underestimate timing. Bucharest feels calmer early in the day, while afternoons and evenings get crowded in popular areas, especially Old Town. If you want the best photos and a smoother experience, start earlier, take breaks mid-day, and keep evenings for food, nightlife, and the city’s energy.

What do you need to do now? Plan it, get here and enjoy your city break to Bucharest!
