Romanian Peasant Museum Hosts Folk Rugs Exhibition in September

The exhibition “Weaving the world. Romanian folk rugs from the heritage of the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History in Chisinau and the Romanian Peasant National Museum” will open on September 8 at 5 pm. at the ‘Tancred Banateanu‘ Hall of the Romanian Peasant Museum.

The exhibition, organized with the support of the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Bucharest is the result of a 2021 cooperation agreement between the two museums. It brings together some of the most beautiful, priceless rugs the two national institutions keep.

The items that will be displayed represent not just an implicit tribute to the anonymous creators of these treasures but also to ethnographer Alexandru Tzigara-Samurcas, who collected the first rugs in the trove of the Bucharest museum and whose 150th birth anniversary is celebrated in 2022.

The exhibition also marks the opening of the Days of the Peasant Museum, which will take place from September 8 to 18. Opening days are Tuesday through Sunday until October 23.

The exciting fact about the significant art of traditional rug weaving is that in 2016, UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage entered the traditional rug weaving techniques used in Romania and the Republic of Moldova on the Representative List of the Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The art of weaving traditional rugs remains a priceless legacy in Romanian history. Today these carpets represent the authenticity of conventional Romanian art, unique in the world. So, if you want to see and understand the art and history of Romania’s traditional art, this is an excellent opportunity to start.
