There are many places in Romania worth visiting this season, such as the high-altitude roads that offer spectacular views or the old Dacian capital surrounded by a dense forest dressed in vivid colors in this period. Take your pick from our selection of the best Romanian destinations to visit in October!

Summer is over, it’s time for these romantic autumn destinations to shine. Let’s see the Top 10 Stunning Romanian Destinations to Visit in October!

Sighișoara

Sighisoara

Sighisoara is one of the most beautiful and well-preserved medieval citadels in Europe and one of the few fortified towns that are still inhabited today.

Due to its excellent position and exquisite medieval aspect, Sighisoara attracts many tourists every year, being declared a valuable historical monument. The best thing to do while in the old center is to just wander through the winding, cobblestone streets and admire the cheerful, rainbow-colored houses.

Sibiu

Sibiu

Sibiu can be a great city break destination in any season, but its colors during autumn will make it even more charming than usual.

In 2007, Sibiu was the European Cultural Capital, and for good reason. Not only is it a stunning medieval city, among one of the most beautiful ones in Romania, but it is also impressive when it comes to cultural events, so you could never get bored here while visiting.

Visitors have many attractions to discover in this Transylvanian city and plenty of events to choose from throughout the year. From this point on, you’ll have to explore, and one of the most interesting things to do while in Sibiu is to discover the Sibiu Old Town by yourself. Venture on lesser populated streets, admire the beautifully preserved houses, and don’t be afraid to see or ask what the locals do – they are very friendly! There are many hidden spots, narrow alleys and little gems to be found and that’s the authentic feeling of Sibiu Old Town.

Transfagarasan Road

Transfagarasan (DN7C road) is by far the most popular high-altitude road in Romania, but driving on it always makes it an experience worth trying. And the autumn colors really make it worth the trip! It definitely deserves a place in the Top 10 Stunning Romanian Destinations!

Transfagarasan is 90 km long and reaches an altitude of 2,042 meters, being the second-highest road in Romania after Transalpina, which has a maximum altitude of 2,145 meters. Another top attraction from the Transfagarasan is Balea Lake, an iconic glacial lake located at an altitude of 2,034 meters, close to the highest point of the road. It’s the main resource for creating a unique attraction in Romania, the Ice Hotel.

Viscri

Viscri is a small village located in Transylvania, which became well-known worldwide after Prince Charles bought a house here in 1996.

You can come here and stay for a few days in a traditional house, visit one of the oldest fortified churches of Transylvania (which is also a UNESCO site) and climb the church’s tower, walk around the village, enjoy the silence and the sounds of nature and eat healthy, traditional food made by the locals.

The guesthouses where you can stay have been reconditioned, while the authentic look and feel of the rooms have been carefully kept alive. This way, you will be able to enjoy a genuine, traditional countryside Romanian experience.

Viscri is one of the most beautiful places to visit during this season because it’s peaceful, it’s situated right in the middle of nature and you can experience the countryside to its fullest.

The Corvin Castle

Corvin Castle

The Corvin Castle is the most important Gothic-style secular building in Transylvania. The castle is a large and imposing military and administrative structure, with tall and colored roof tiles, impressive towers, turrets, windows, and balconies with intricate stone carvings.

Corvin Castle is the perfect destination for anyone who wants to discover a legendary castle. This gothic masterpiece of Transylvania, also known as Hunedoara Castle or Hunyadi Castle, is the largest medieval building in Romania and one of the most beautiful castles in the world. It was included in the top “10 European dream destinations” and we have included it in the Top 10 Stunning Romanian Destinations, also.

The castle is located in south-western Transylvania, in Hunedoara County, and is one of the most valuable medieval monuments of Romania, that has fascinated the world for centuries.

Sarmizegetusa Regia

Sarmizegetusa Regia, the former capital of Dacia, is also a great place to add to the list of places to see in autumn. Hidden in the dense forests, the site is filled with history and can be the best choice for a relaxing trip, giving visitors the chance to return home with amazing photos and a great story to tell.

This archeological site was the most important military, religious and political center of the ancient Dacians.

Sarmizegetusa Regia is located in Sureanu Mountains, in Gradistea Muncelului-Cioclovina Nature Park.

The Peles Castle

Located 40 miles south of Brasov and 80 miles north from Bucharest, the Peles Castle is a masterpiece of German new-Renaissance architecture, considered by many ones of the most stunning castles in Europe.

Peleș Castle covers an area of about 3.200 square meters, has 170 rooms and over 30 bathrooms. Not to mention it has many valuable collections of paintings, sculptures, statues, tapestry, ceramics, furniture, armor, gold and silver artifacts, porcelain, and so on. It was the first entirely electrified castle in Europe. Plus, it was among the very few to be provided with central heating in the late 19th century. A true royal jewel in the middle of stunning scenery! And these are just a few reasons why we have included the castle in the Top 10 Stunning Romanian Destinations to visit in October!

Cazanele Dunării

A trip to Cazanele Dunarii is always a great idea. But it’s even more impressive in the autumn when the red, yellow, orange, brown and all the other beautiful colors of the season transform the place into a story-like destination.

The Danube is one of Romania’s most beautiful natural assets. It flows across the whole southern part of Romania and creates the wonderful Danube Delta just before reaching the Black Sea. Right after entering Romania, it creates a stunning Danube Gorges, which are a very popular tourist destination. The whole area is worth a visit, as the Danube carves some spectacular sights through its flow.

There are some boat tours from Orșova, which you can take to visit the Danube Gorge. It takes around one and a half hour. Tours start often so don’t be stressed about the timetable.

Brașov

Brasov

It is a known fact that during autumn Romania has the best weather for exploring. Not too hot or too cold, it allows you to enjoy a full day of walking tours or visiting. Furthermore, it is the best season for mountain hiking and nature tours.

Located at the very heart of Romania, Brasov is perhaps the country’s most well-known destination next to Bucharest. For good reason. Brașov is a beautiful Romanian city and admiring its charms is well worth a day trip from Bucharest.

More and more travelers are amazed by the beauty of this city. Brasov is also, a perfect destination for those who want to get lost on the streets with a medieval air, but also for those who want a little adventure, in the fresh air.
