Al Di Meola, the famous American guitarist, returns to Romania on June 3 for a new concert at the Palace Hall. This event will take place more than half a year since he had to interrupt a show at the Roman Arenas (Arenele Romane) in Bucharest following a heart attack.
At that moment, Meola was taken to one of Bucharest’s hospitals around midnight, and the Romanian doctors saved his life by installing four stents in his heart. That was worldwide breaking news, but soon Meola left the country in good health.
This is why the concert on June 3 will be marked by two special moments, one being a tribute to the Romanian doctors who saved his life after last year’s show. The second is a duet that he has been preparing with his friend Ovidiu Lipan Tăndărică, the former drummer of Phoenix, the Romanian folk-rock band. The two became friends after the heart attack of the American singer at the end of last year.
Born in New Jersey in 1954, Al Di Meola is a virtuoso guitarist renowned for exploring jazz fusion and world music. A prodigy, he attended Berklee College of Music at a young age, and by 19, his talent had landed him a coveted spot in Chick Corea’s legendary band, Return to Forever. He then recorded with the supergroup Go, further solidifying his reputation. Di Meola’s solo career took off in the 70s and 80s, with albums like „Land of the Midnight Sun” and „Elegant Gypsy” showcasing his mastery of jazz fusion, flamenco, and Mediterranean influences.
These successes earned him critical acclaim and commercial recognition, with „Elegant Gypsy” even achieving gold certification. His dazzling technique on electric and acoustic guitars and his soulful compositions continue to captivate audiences worldwide.
