Bucharest’s Athenaeum Summer Festival returns in 2026 from June 13 to June 28 at the Romanian Athenaeum, bringing classical music, film scores, choral arrangements, baroque works and crossover performances to one of the city’s most beautiful cultural landmarks.
Organised by the George Enescu Philharmonic, the festival opens with a free outdoor concert on the Athenaeum Esplanade and continues with five concerts in the Grand Hall. The 2026 programme ranges from brass music and Nordic choral soundscapes to ABBA arrangements, Vivaldi, Janoska-style fusion and a John Williams tribute dedicated to the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence.
Athenaeum Summer Festival 2026 Highlights

The festival opens on June 13 with Athenaeum Brass Orchestra, conducted by Adrian Petrescu, in a free open-air concert on the Esplanade of the Romanian Athenaeum. The programme combines film music, waltzes, South American rhythms and German ceremonial music in a relaxed summer setting.
On June 17, Northern Lights brings the George Enescu Philharmonic Choir and the Athenaeum String Quartet to the Grand Hall. The concert moves from modern Nordic music and luminous choral textures to well-known ABBA songs arranged for choir, piano, percussion, double bass and saxophone.
On June 20, Beyond Classics presents a fusion concert with the Romanian Youth Orchestra and the Janoska Ensemble, conducted by Cristian Măcelaru. The evening combines Bartók, Strauss, Vivaldi, improvisation and the distinctive crossover style of the Slovak ensemble.
On June 23, Vivaldissimo is dedicated to Antonio Vivaldi and the energy of Italian baroque music. The concert is performed by the Sempre Baroque Ensemble, together with instrumental soloists and soprano Renáta Gebe-Fügi.
The festival closes on June 27 and 28 with America 250 – Homage to John Williams, performed by the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Stefan Geiger, with violinist Rafael Butaru as soloist. The programme includes music from Superman, Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, E.T., Hook, Schindler’s List and Star Wars.
