The COCON exotic butterfly exhibition at the Grigore Antipa National Museum of Natural History in Bucharest brings a tropical nature experience to the heart of the city this summer. Open from June 26 to September 6, 2026, the exhibition can be visited in the greenhouse located in the courtyard of Antipa Museum.
The exhibition presents live exotic butterflies in a controlled environment designed to reproduce the temperature and humidity conditions of tropical habitats. Visitors can walk through the greenhouse and observe butterflies flying freely among plants, in a setting that feels very different from a classic museum display.
COCON is one of the most attractive temporary exhibitions in Bucharest this summer, especially for families, children, nature lovers, photographers, and visitors seeking a short but memorable cultural experience near Victoriei Square.

Antipa Museum is already one of Bucharest’s most popular museums, known for its natural history collections, dioramas and educational exhibitions. With COCON, the museum adds a seasonal experience centred on living butterflies, transformation, and direct contact with nature.
The exhibition is hosted in the museum courtyard greenhouse, where visitors can see exotic butterflies in flight, resting on plants or feeding in a space arranged to resemble a tropical habitat. The experience is visual, calm, and easy to understand, making it suitable for both adults and children.
Unlike traditional museum exhibitions, where insects are usually displayed as preserved specimens, COCON focuses on living butterflies and the fragile beauty of their short adult life. This gives visitors a closer look at colour, movement and natural behaviour.

The exhibition includes exotic butterfly species from Southeast Asia, Central and South America, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Among the species presented are blue morpho butterflies, emerald swallowtails, malachite butterflies and owl butterflies.
One of the most interesting parts of the exhibition is the butterfly nursery. Here, visitors may observe the moment when butterflies emerge from the pupa, unfold their wings and prepare for their first flight. It is a rare opportunity to see the final stage of metamorphosis in real time.
The exhibition also helps visitors understand the complete life cycle of butterflies, from transformation inside the chrysalis to the first moments of adult life. For children, this can be both educational and visually impressive. For adults, it offers a quiet and unusual nature experience in the middle of Bucharest.

COCON is a good choice for anyone looking for a family-friendly activity in Bucharest during summer 2026. It is easy to visit, centrally located, and suitable for a wide range of visitors, from tourists to local families.
The exhibition works well as part of a larger museum visit. Visitors can explore the permanent collection of Antipa Museum and then continue with the butterfly greenhouse in the courtyard. The experience is neither long nor difficult, making it easy to include in a half-day itinerary.
For tourists, COCON is also a good way to discover one of Bucharest’s most important museums while adding something seasonal and unexpected to the visit. The museum is located close to Victoriei Square, near other major cultural stops and public transport connections.
