Bucharest is transformed this autumn through the lens of artistic innovation at the SURSA International Light Art Festival. Hosted at the National Library of Romania between October 13 and 19, 2025, SURSA invites visitors to experience the creative potential of light as art, exploring immersive installations, vivid projections, and luminous sculptures. Internationally renowned and Romanian artists gather for this milestone event, offering a fresh dialogue about technology, architecture, and sensitivity.
SURSA marks a new chapter in Romania’s cultural landscape, building on the legacy of the AMURAL festival that first introduced light art a decade ago. This edition brings together celebrated figures like Laszlo Bordos (Hungary), Maotik (France), Moulab (Italy), In-Dialogue (France), and leading Romanian creators from architecture, video-mapping, installation, and digital art. The festival challenges visitors to see light as more than decoration – here, it becomes a sensory and conceptual journey, reshaping space and public perception.
The festival’s central exhibition takes place at the National Library of Romania. Installations are designed to be experienced from multiple vantage points, both at ground level and from elevated walkways, revealing new dimensions of every artwork. Alongside the main displays, SURSA features the “Art Light Forum,” a round-table event fostering dialogue among artists, curators, and professionals from related fields, enriching the festival’s focus and impact.
Admission to SURSA is free, but prior registration is required, ensuring accessibility for all residents and tourists.
The program includes:
- Immersive installations and expressive structures driven by innovative light technologies
- Contributions from international names such as Laszlo Bordos, Maotik, MOULAB, In-Dialogue, and respected Romanian artists
- A collaborative and experimental curatorial approach that invites every visitor to participate in the narrative of light art
- Thematic events and expert discussions encourage a more profound understanding and networking
SURSA is not just an art event; it’s a manifesto, placing Bucharest at the heart of contemporary light art and inviting everyone to rediscover the city in a radiant new way. Along with other light festivals like Spotlight, this sort of initiative makes Bucharest more attractive and offers a certain vibe.
