Vintage 50s-80s Automobiles Exhibition at Baneasa Airport

The Baneasa Airport will host the second edition of the „City’s Socialist Automobiles” exhibition on Saturday, October 1, from 10:00 a.m. to 16:00 p.m. The exhibition will feature vehicles once operational in Bucharest during the 1950s and 1980s.

Automobiles that existed in Bucharest in the 1950s-1980s and their stories come together in an exceptional exhibition that presents the automotive phenomenon in Romania’s socialist period. A story about people, cars and their journeys from socialism is told in 3 documents: the Privileged, the State, and the Citizens of the Republic.

Retromobil Club Romania

The exhibition features a one-of-a-kind collection of emblematic cars from 1948 to 1989. It charts the evolution of the communist era’s automotive phenomenon over three distinct periods, each with its own unique characteristics: Stalinism (1947 – 1965), De-Stalinization – the democratization of the automobile (1965-1980), Ceausescu’s National Communism (1980-1989).

Examples of vehicles used privately by socialist dignitaries will be on display, as well as President Nicolae Ceausescu’s official cars, a Dacia 1300 tuned for racing „as in the old days,” the renowned Roman RD 111 bus, western-style automobiles purchased by the wealthy in the 1970s from state dealerships and those acquired by commoners on waiting lists in the 1980s, as well as utility vehicles used by the communist police, fire brigade, army, and political police Securitate.

Retromobil Club Romania is a group dedicated to encouraging the best preservation of historic vehicles in Romania and cultivating the passion for collecting and restoring them. It was founded in 1998 by 21 enthusiasts of landmark cars and was constructed by the principles of comparable organizations in nations with a tradition in the field.
