Sânziene Fair at the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant: June 19-21, 2026

The National Museum of the Romanian Peasant invites Bucharest residents and visitors to the Sânziene Fair, taking place from Friday, June 19, to Sunday, June 21, 2026, between 10:00 and 18:00.

Hosted at one of Bucharest’s most important cultural museums, the fair brings together around 50 folk craftsmen, antique dealers and artists, offering visitors the chance to discover traditional objects, handmade creations and old pieces from the Romanian rural household.

    What is the Sânziene Fair?

The Sânziene Fair is inspired by one of the most poetic celebrations in Romanian folk tradition. In popular belief, the Sânziene are magical, benevolent beings associated with fertility, love, healing and the protection of nature.

Starting from this rich symbolic world, the fair creates a meeting place for Romanian craftsmanship, rural memory and seasonal celebration. Visitors will be able to admire and buy icons, wooden objects, ceramics, woven textiles, toys, jewellery, old household items and many other objects shaped by hand and tradition.

    Traditional crafts and live demonstrations

During the three days of the event, invited craftsmen will not only exhibit their work, but also demonstrate their techniques and speak to visitors about their craft.

Woodworkers, leather artisans, ceramicists, icon painters and weavers will be present at the fair, offering a closer look at the skills, patience and cultural meaning behind traditional Romanian objects.

For travellers interested in authentic Bucharest experiences, this is a good opportunity to see Romanian heritage outside the usual museum display, in direct contact with the people who still keep these crafts alive.

Local food and Romanian seasonal products

The fair will also include traditional food products and small producers. Visitors can expect honey, homemade cakes, herbal teas, gingerbread, palincă, and țuică, along with other seasonal products associated with Romanian rural life.

The event is designed not only as a cultural fair, but also as a way to support small Romanian producers, artisans and creators.

The meaning of Sânziene in Romanian tradition

Sânziene is celebrated on June 24 and is one of the most layered feasts in Romanian popular culture. Depending on the region, the celebration may be connected to religious devotion, healing plants, fertility rituals, protective customs or the magical world of fairies.

In some parts of the country, Sânziene are imagined as good fairies who fly through the night sky and bring luck to crops, health and love. They are generous, especially on the night before their feast, but popular tradition says they may become dangerous if people disrespect them.

Young girls traditionally picked yellow or white sânziene flowers and made wreaths and belts from them. The wreaths were placed on houses, each representing a family member, and the way they dried, fell, or were carried by the wind was believed to predict luck, marriage, or misfortune in the year ahead.

Sânziene was also considered an important time for gathering medicinal plants. In folk belief, plants collected around this celebration had special healing powers and could be used in remedies, rituals and protective practices.

In other regions of Romania, the celebration is known as Drăgaică. There, young girls would become Drăgăici, one of them dressed as a bride, believed to bring fertility to the fields and fragrance to the flowers.
