    Opera Christmas Market
Saturday, 22 November 2025 / Published in Top Bucharest

Bucharest Opera Christmas Market 2025 – Christmas Fair by the National Opera

Bucharest Opera Christmas Market is the most elegant of the three big Christmas markets organised by Bucharest City Hall in winter 2025–2026. Set on the esplanade of the National Opera House, it mixes Christmas lights with classical music, a relaxed atmosphere and a layout inspired by small French squares. It’s less about rides and noise and more about mood, music and a refined winter evening.

Christmas market on the esplanade of the National Opera

The market takes place right in front of Opera Națională București, on the wide esplanade that overlooks the boulevard and the Dâmbovița river. The building itself – lit up for the season – becomes part of the decor, with stalls and food trucks arranged in front of it and around the fountains.

Compared with the more crowded squares in the very centre, the Opera Christmas Market feels slightly more open and calm. You still get people, music and food, but with a different backdrop: the Opera House, the river and the tree-lined boulevard that connects the area to Eroilor and the old centre.

Bucharest Opera Christmas Market: Dates, schedule and location

For the 2025–2026 season, Bucharest Opera Christmas Market runs for most of December:

    • Location: Esplanade of the National Opera House, Bd. Mihail Kogălniceanu 70–72, Sector 5
    • Season: 6 – 28 December 2025
    • Organisers: Bucharest City Hall, through CREART, in partnership with the Ministry of Culture and Opera Națională București
    • Entry: free admission – you only pay for what you eat, drink or buy

On most days, the market opens in the afternoon and stays active into the evening, when the lights, music and setting in front of the Opera look their best.

A Christmas market built around music

    Old violin

The 2025 edition has a clear theme: music – because music brings people together.

Throughout the fair, you can expect:

    • Classical music and carols played from the stage or sound system
    • Evenings themed around opera, classical crossover or orchestral arrangements
    • Guest appearances from artists connected to the National Opera programme, alongside choirs and invited performers

The idea is to create a Christmas market where the soundtrack is more likely to be strings, choirs and refined arrangements than only chart hits. It feels closer to a small classical festival in a decorated square.

The esplanade is dressed up with:

    • A Christmas tree positioned to frame the view of the Opera building
    • Light installations and festive arches that define the alleys between stalls
    • Decor inspired by European piazzas, with small groups of chalets and terraces instead of one single compact block

It’s one of the most photogenic Christmas spots in Bucharest, especially if you stand further back to capture the tree, stalls and the Opera façade in one shot.

Opera Christmas Market keeps the classic mix of wooden chalets and food trucks. Over the course of the month, visitors can try:

    • Traditional Romanian dishes – sausages, stews, soups and grilled specialties
    • Street-food style options from different cuisines
    • Sweets, cakes, doughnuts, waffles and winter desserts
    • Hot chocolate, coffee, soft drinks and, of course, mulled wine

Compared with the more “street-food heavy” Downtown Christmas Market, the offer here feels a bit more curated and aligned with the overall elegant vibe, but you’ll still find familiar fair favourites if you just want something simple and hot.

Even though the focus is on music and atmosphere, Bucharest Opera Christmas Market also caters to families with children. The programme includes:

    • Creative workshops hosted in or near the chalets – drawing, small crafts, seasonal activities
    • Occasional storytelling or themed events tied to fairy tales and winter stories
    • Soft entertainment and photo spots around the tree and decorated areas

Because the esplanade is a defined, open space with clear edges, it’s relatively easy to keep an eye on kids while you enjoy the music and a hot drink.

How to get to Bucharest Opera Christmas Market

The National Opera sits just west of the city centre, between Eroilor and the Parliament area, on Bd. Mihail Kogălniceanu and right near Cotroceni.

    By metro

The closest metro station is Eroilor (served by lines M1, M3 and M5). From there, it’s about 10 minutes on foot:

    • Exit towards Opera / Cotroceni
    • Walk along the boulevard and follow the signs towards Opera Națională

You can also reach the market by walking from Izvor or the Parliament area, though the route is slightly longer.

    By bus or tram

Several bus and tram lines run along Bd. Mihail Kogălniceanu and nearby streets, linking the Opera to the Old Town, Universitate and other central areas. In December evenings, this is often the most practical way to arrive, as traffic can be slow and parking limited.

    By car or taxi

There is some parking around the Opera and on adjacent streets, but spots fill up quickly when performances and the Christmas market overlap. If you’re visiting at peak hours, it’s generally easier to use the metro or a taxi that drops you close to the esplanade and then continue on foot.

Combine the Opera Christmas Market with other Christmas markets in Bucharest

Bucharest Opera Christmas Market is part of the trio of large markets run by the municipality:

    • Bucharest Christmas Market – in Piața Constituției
    • Bucharest Downtown Christmas Market – in University Square
    • Bucharest Opera Christmas Market – in front of the National Opera House

It’s easy to design an evening where you:

    • Start at the Opera Christmas Market for an elegant, music-focused experience
    • Move towards University Square for the more urban Downtown market and street food
    • End at Piața Constituției to see the largest Christmas tree and the big main fair

If you also plan to visit the West Side Christmas Market or Winter Wonderland in other sectors, the Opera can be your “cultural” stop on a wider Christmas route through the city.

Tips for visiting Bucharest Opera Christmas Market

    • Aim for concert evenings. Check the programme and try to visit when there’s a live performance; the whole concept is built around music.
    • Dress a bit smarter if you like. You’ll see many people coming before or after opera and ballet performances; the crowd often feels slightly more dressed up than at other markets.
    • Arrive before or after show times. When a performance finishes at the Opera, the esplanade fills quickly – great for atmosphere, but dense.
    • Take your time. This market isn’t about rushing between rides; it’s about strolling, listening to the music, and enjoying a drink with the Opera building in front of you.

For visitors who want a Christmas experience with more classical music, refined decor and a unique location, Bucharest Opera Christmas Market is the perfect complement to the larger and louder fairs elsewhere in the city.
