Bucharest Downtown Christmas Market is the Christmas fair set right in the middle of the city, in University Square. While other Christmas Markets in Bucharest spread around Parliament or the Opera, this one brings Christmas lights, food, music and a big tree directly into the downtown area, a few minutes’ walk from the Old Town and most central hotels.
For visitors, it’s the easiest Christmas market to reach and the one that feels most “urban”: street-food smells, traffic passing nearby, people coming from work or university and stopping for a drink, and the Christmas tree set between the statues and historic buildings.
Christmas market in University Square

The Bucharest Downtown Christmas Market takes place on the “statues esplanade” of University Square, in front of the University of Bucharest and close to the Grand Hotel Bucharest.
The concept is simple: a compact but busy Christmas market, packed with food trucks, light installations, a Christmas tree and a carousel, designed more like a festive meeting point than a huge theme-park fair. If you’re staying near the Old Town or University Square, this is the market you’ll probably pass by every evening.
Dates, schedule and location

For the 2025–2026 season, Bucharest Downtown Christmas Market runs for the whole month of December, from the end of November through just after Christmas.
- Location: University Square (Piața Universității), “statues esplanade”
- Season: end of November – 28 December 2025
- Entry: access is free; you only pay for what you eat, drink or buy
Being right in the centre, the market gets busy quickly after work hours, especially on Fridays and weekends, when the area fills with locals heading to the Old Town and tourists coming from nearby hotels.
What you’ll find at Bucharest Downtown Christmas Market

Even if it’s more compact than the primary market at Piața Constituției – Constitution Square, Bucharest Downtown Christmas Market manages to pack a lot into a relatively small space.
You can expect:
- A large Christmas tree is the visual centre of the market
- Light installations and Christmas decorations around the esplanade
- A carousel and small attractions for children
- A stage area used for music, carols and small shows
- Dozens of food trucks and wooden chalets act as a street-food Christmas village
Most evenings you’ll have some background programme: carols, DJs, small concerts or themed events, always with the Christmas tree and lights as the backdrop.
Street food and winter drinks

One of the significant differences between this market and more traditional ones is the intense focus on food trucks and street food.
Instead of only classic fair stalls with sarmale and grilled meats, part of the Romanian traditional food, you’ll also find:
- Burgers, hot dogs, loaded fries and other comfort food
- Wraps, tacos or fusion dishes, depending on the year’s line-up
- Pastries, waffles, crepes and cakes
- Hot chocolate, coffee specialities and plenty of mulled wine
If you want to grab a quick, casual dinner in a festive setting, Bucharest Downtown Christmas Market is perfect: it’s central, it’s fast, and you can continue your evening in the Old Town a few minutes away.
Atmosphere and entertainment

Because of its location, Bucharest Downtown Christmas Market feels a bit different from the more “storybook” markets in parks or big squares. Here you’re surrounded by:
- The University of Bucharest and its historic building
- The National Theatre is just across the street
- The boulevard that connects University Square to Romană Square
- The constant flow of people changing buses, trams or crossing towards the Old Town
The result is a very urban Christmas atmosphere: office workers in winter coats, students, families, tourists – all mixing under the same lights. Add music from the stage, steam coming from the food trucks and the smell of mulled wine, and you have one of the most photogenic winter scenes in Bucharest.
How to get to Bucharest Downtown Christmas Market
One of the significant advantages of this market is its easy accessibility from almost anywhere in the city.
By metro
- Use line M2 (north–south line) and get off at Universitate
- Follow the signs to the University Square exits – when you reach street level, you are already at the market
By bus or trolleybus
Multiple buses and trolleybuses stop around University Square, connecting it to Piata Unirii, Piata Romană, the north of the city and several residential areas. If you’re staying in central Bucharest, chances are you’ll have a direct line to Universitate.
On foot
If you are staying in or near the Old Town, Unirii Square, Romană or Calea Victoriei, it’s usually easiest to walk:
- From Old Town / Unirii, walk up along the main boulevard towards the University
- From Romană, walk down along Magheru Boulevard until you reach the big intersection with the University building and the statues
Because of its position, Bucharest Downtown Christmas Market is also a very good “bridge” between different Christmas experiences on the same evening.
Combine the Downtown market with other Christmas markets
Bucharest now has several big Christmas markets, and the Downtown one fits perfectly into a multi-stop route.
In one evening you can:
- Start at Bucharest Downtown Christmas Market in University Square
- Walk or take a short ride to Bucharest Christmas Market in Piața Constituției, in front of the Parliament
- Add a visit to Bucharest Opera Christmas Market or to West Side Christmas Market in Drumul Taberei if you’re heading towards the west of the city
For many visitors, the Downtown Christmas Market is the starting point: you grab food here, take photos near the tree, then move on to see the bigger fair at the Parliament or the more park-like experience in Drumul Taberei.
Tips for visiting Bucharest Downtown Christmas Market
- Go after dark. The lights and city backdrop only make sense once it’s fully evening.
- Expect crowds. This is literally in the middle of the city: after work, before parties, between university classes – it’s always busy, especially on Fridays and weekends.
- Dress for standing around. You’re not in a park, you’re mostly on stone and concrete, so the cold can feel stronger if you stay still in front of the stage or by the tree.
- Use it as a hub. Because it’s in University Square, you can easily use the Downtown Christmas Market as your central hub and explore other Christmas markets, the Old Town and nearby streets from here.
For a visitor, Bucharest Downtown Christmas Market is the definition of central, easy Christmas fun: step out of the metro at Universitate, and Christmas is quite literally right in front of you.
