Piata Romana Square

Piața Romană, or Roman Square, is a vibrant and vital intersection in central Bucharest, located in Sector 1. It is where key boulevards such as Lascăr Catargiu and Magheru cross, running northwest towards Piața Victoriei and south-southeast towards University Square, respectively. The square also aligns with the Bucharest Metro Line M2, serving as a convenient stop at the Piața Romană metro station.

Historically, between 1997 and 2010, the square featured the Capitoline Wolf statue, symbolising Latin culture, although the statue has since been moved. Notably, the main building of the Academy of Economic Studies is situated to the north of the square, highlighting its academic and cultural importance.

The square is also mentioned in Romanian music and is surrounded by a variety of cafes, restaurants, and attractive buildings, including the George Enescu Philharmonic nearby. Its location makes it a great starting point to explore Bucharest, whether walking east along Bulevardul Dacia to see embassy mansions or heading towards other major city landmarks.

Visitors to Piața Romană can easily access it by metro, bus, taxi, or on foot from other parts of the city, with frequent and affordable public transportation options. It sits in a lively part of Bucharest that blends business, culture, and leisure in a way that gives a true sense of the city's dynamic energy.

Piata Romana is also one of the 14 stops made during the Bucharest City Tour by the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus.

Academy of Economic Studies

ASE

The Academy of Economic Studies is the premier institution for economic education in Romania, established in 1913. Its main building at Piața Romană is a striking example of interwar architecture featuring classical design elements and a distinctive silver dome.

ASE has played a critical role in shaping Romania’s economic policies and business education through its comprehensive programs. Inside, the Aula Magna hall houses a magnificent mural depicting the history of Romanian commerce, reflecting the institution's deep cultural and intellectual heritage. ASE is not only an academic powerhouse but a significant architectural landmark at the heart of the square.

Recently, ASE has got a distinctive copper layer over parts of the original building, which made it one of the most impressive hybrid buildings in the country.

Along with the University of Bucharest, ASE is the most prestigious academic institution in Bucharest.
