Spring in Bucharest brings a touch of Japanese tradition with the annual Hanami celebration, honoring the fleeting beauty of cherry blossoms. This year, the event is scheduled for April 12th, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, in the serene Japanese Garden of King Mihai I Park (formerly Herăstrău Park).
A Glimpse into Japanese Culture
Organized by the Embassy of Japan in Romania in collaboration with the Bucharest City Hall, Hanami offers attendees a rich cultural experience:
- Tea Ceremony: Witness the artful preparation and presentation of traditional Japanese tea.
- Workshops: Engage in hands-on activities such as origami (the craft of paper folding), calligraphy, and dressing in yukata, a casual summer kimono.
- Performances: Enjoy the resonant sounds of Wadaiko (Japanese drums) and observe martial arts demonstrations, such as karate, kendo, and kyudo (Japanese archery).
These activities provide a window into Japan’s traditions and offer participants an immersive cultural journey.
A Celebration Amidst Cherry Blossoms
Hanami, meaning „flower viewing,” is a cherished Japanese custom where people gather under blooming cherry trees to appreciate their transient beauty. Bucharest’s Japanese Garden, adorned with these delicate blossoms, provides the perfect backdrop for this celebration. Visitors are encouraged to relax under the flowering trees and partake in the festivities.
